Many reasons can account for why one may decide to flee a traffic stop. Prior issues with law enforcement, outstanding warrants or possession of illegal substances are many cited reasons for one deciding to evade law enforcement. Regardless, car accidents are sometimes caused by drivers fleeing from police officers. A resulting collision may end up hurting others in or near the roadway, simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A 26-year-old man recently pleaded guilty to numerous criminal charges, including homicide by vehicle, fleeing police and aggravated assault. The charges stem from a police chase that took place in western Pennsylvania and took the life of another motorist. The incident began when the man fled a traffic stop.
While leading police on a chase, the man swerved around another vehicle on the road. The trooper, who was in pursuit of the fleeing suspect, hit the woman’s vehicle. The driver, a 66-year-old female, died due to her injuries. A civil lawsuit by the deceased’s husband and discipline of the trooper may still follow. A claim for damages might be appropriately filed against the trooper and the Pennsylvania State Police, as well as the man who has since pleaded guilty in criminal court.
Car accidents that occur due to the negligence or illegal activity of another can leave one seriously hurt or family members without a loved one. Seeking legal recourse may be an option, and a Pennsylvania attorney may be able to provide help. A successful wrongful death claim filed in a civil court may help to cover medical expenses, lost wages and final expenses, if necessary.
